History of the Charolais

The Charolais breed originates from Charolais, a province in the East of France, more than 200 years ago. The breed was developed in mild climate conditions, and on good pastures, under the influence of the market requiring lean meat. Currently, the Charolais breed takes the first place among the beef breeds of cattle in France with a population of over 1.8 million.

The breed as we know it nowadays, originated from crossbreeding the original Charolais breed with the Simmental breed and subsequent crossbreeding with white colored Shorthorns. This crossbreeding combined with abundant feeding, resulted in the production of large bodied cattle. In the 20th century the breed was further developed, to improve features such as weight gain, meat quality and carcass yield.
