Saanen goats are highly valued for their exceptional milk production, with good butterfat and protein content, making them ideal for both fluid milk and cheese production. Their adaptability to various climates, particularly cooler regions, and efficient forage utilization enable them to thrive in diverse farming environments. Known for their calm and gentle temperament, Saanen goats are easy to handle and manage, making them suitable for both large commercial operations and small farms. Additionally, their year-round breeding capability, high fertility rates, and robust health with good disease resistance contribute to their economic value and efficiency in dairy operations.
The breed standard is recognized by a narrow snout and a broad forehead with vertically placed ears. The animal has a wide back and chest and thick straight legs. The body is straight and prolongated with a long neck. They have a short, fine, creamy or white coat, however dark spots can be found on the udder and skin. Because of their light-colored skin, the breed is sensitive to the sun and does not thrive as well in hot climates with strong sunshine. Keeping Saanen goats in these circumstances requires sufficient shade or shelter.
