Simmental

One of the oldest breeds in the world

Simmental breed is the best example of the dual-purpose cattle, with a good combination of dairy and meat productivity. The milk productivity of the different breed types varies considerably, so if 100% is a benchmark milk yield, then then milk-oriented variation of the Simmental will yield 125% of milk, and the meat-oriented variation Simmental will yield 84% of milk.

According to the breed standard, the Simmental breed has a pale yellow, pale-mottled or red-mottled thick skin and a red with white head. Udders of the females are round, the nipples are large conical or cylindrical shape.

History of the Simmental

The ancestors of the Simmental breed were brought from Scandinavia to the territory of today’s Switzerland in the middle of the 5th century and was subsequently bred as a result of a long selection and breeding process. The name of the breed comes from the valley of the Simme River in the canton of Bern.

For a long time, under the influence of changing economic conditions, the formation of a new breed was an ongoing process until the establishment of the breed standard at the beginning of the 20th century. Due to its good ability to adapt in different climates and high fertility and reproduction capability, Simmental cattle has become widespread in many countries of Europe, America and Africa.
